Today i wanted to talk a little bit about both a poem in the poetry packet and a couple excerpts in writing down the bones. The poem i want to talk about in the poetry packet is the one from Susan Howe called "Singularities". At first, before we talked about it in class i was intimidated by this poem because of its style and format. However, after we talked about it in class and i read more into it, i really liked the way she connected the words in her poem to the war that she was describing and painting a picture for. The chaotic way she designed the words on the page described how chaotic and hectic war really is.

Next, i would like to talk about a exerpt from Goldberg's book that was interesting to me. The "writing as a practice" part was cool because the author was explaining how writers should not say "I'm going to write a timeless poem today" rather just go into writing without any preconcived  notions. Getting your thoughts on paper without any preconceptions can be effective for any writer weather it be a poem, novel, or short story.

Lastly, I would like to hit on another excerpt called "artistic stability" which I liked. Goldberg explained how she has piles of notebooks that are filled with intimate thoughts and feelings that a freind read. Goldberg was relieved because the freind read the notebooks and got a feeling for who she really is. This is important to me because i think every person is at their best when they are themselves. writing about your true inner thoughts and feeling can be the most productive and effective writing.

Emily Dickinson Poems

I have read through the four Emily Dickinson poems and they stood out to me because of the style that she has when she writes. To me, the descriptions she uses are very interesting. For example, poem number 377 which, in my opinion, is explaining the distance between the living and the dead; she uses lines like "under the beetles cellar" and "over the comet's chimney". The lines she uses are clever and descriptive which i like. Emily's other poem that i read and enjoyed was about the contrast between the dead and the living. Poem number 375 is talking about graves and coffins being so small and restricted, yet containing deceased people that had long, telling lives. This is what I took from her poems.

Introduction

My name is Jeff Loos and it's my first semester at Eastern Michigan. After receiving an Associate degree from Schoolcraft College I decided to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Biology at Eastern. My love for the outdoors and wildlife are the reasons I have made this decision. To me, becoming successful means doing what you love for a living. I look forward to learning as much as i can about creative writing during this class.
